I do my best to keep this list continually updated and add, subtract and make changes as needed. I’ve added a Yelp link for each restaurant, so you can check out hours and customer reviews of the food. The list includes all of Los Angeles and Orange Counties, but also the Inland Empire in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. You will find classic steakhouses, Googie diners, pastrami delicatessens, walk-up hamburger stands and more. My criteria for the restaurants here is that they are at least 37 years old (1985) or older, although I have made a few exceptions, and that they are within about an hour’s drive from downtown L.A. I’m sure there are many holes in my research and would appreciate additions, updates and corrections in the comments section below.

After a lot of detective work I’ve compiled this “Master List” and plan to update it regularly. I often search the internet for authentic old-school spots in neighborhoods I visit and finding them is not always easy. I pray that old places don’t renovate their mid-century or even mid-’70s decor.

I’m a junkie for vintage architecture and old signs. I’m not as selective about a menu as I am about the ambiance, atmosphere and what I am experiencing. I’m a sucker for a joint with history, charm, character and stories. Oh ya- bag was stapled closed and no itemized receipt was anywhere to be found….We are lucky in Los Angeles to have a lot of spectacular vintage restaurants, but we are still losing many every year to owners who retire, sell out for money or lose their long-held lease to nasty gentrification. Here is a pic of my online order, and then pics of the food I actually got. I called back probably 20 times with no answer and no way to leave a message. I called the restaurant, conveniently it went to voicemail and the mailbox was full. Not one even semi- similar item was in the bag. So 4 minutes later when I got home- completely wrong order. Finally- he basically runs over a bag to me and said “ here you go” and ran off again.

I waited well over an hour, saw him and heard him speaking with 3 other staff members about my order. I came back 15 minutes later to the exact same scenario. From there he panicked, and told me it would be 10 minutes. The guy host was chaotic and very confused. When I asked about a pick ups- she continued to look at her phone and told me to “hold on, she’ll be with me in a minute”. First off- the staff was incredibly rude. I was given a time of 20 minutes to pick it up. Worst experience ever!!!! I will never go here again. Overall, we usually have good service but it's the end of the night so it's not too great because they're probably tired, understandably.

The drinks are really good as well for happy hour! I liked the beef and rice in the stone pot but my boyfriend didn't really like it, so I guess it depends. Kinda small) and the garlic edamame (SO GOOD). We've also had the wings here (they're okay. One time I asked the the sushi pizza with no onions, and the waiter said it would be too hard because it's a mix so I said it's ok, and I guess he didn't hear because he brought it out still, onion free! I felt SO bad but I was thankful because it was good. We've also had the crunchy roll, spicy salmon, lobster roll, and much more but those are our usuals. My favorite roll ever is the OMG roll! Has a mix of everything and it just goes so well together. I mean, 50% off ALL rolls! It doesn't get any better than that!!!įood is a little pricey usually but happy hour is where it's at LOL. I ALWAYS come here for the amazing happy hour, especially the late night one.
